Fusion Indian food- Yay? or Nay?

Are you bored with the same curry smell in every restaurant?

If you're an Indian, like me, you know what role food plays in our lives. It's not really for sustenance alone. It's what you talk about when you meet friends, it fills up awkward conversational silence, its what “aunties” of our community judge you on how “sanskari” you are, it's what we love about weddings and other get-togethers. It's what every Indian has thought about as a business idea, (to open up a restaurant).

Indian food has been always associated with strong curry smells and messy plates. But now that we are in this country, we are bored with the same old recipes and are devising new ways to enjoy the same flavours and adapting them to more diverse palates.

Here are some of our fav fusion food restaurants in San Francisco

  1. Curry up now! - what started as a hip food truck in downtown SF, quickly became the talk of the town among all Indians.  With creative food styles that range from conventional recipes to something we have never tasted before, Curry up now has something for every taste bud. With restaurants in San Francisco, San Mateo, Oakland, Palo Alto, San Jose and Alameda, this place gets a giant thumbs up!

2. Dosa on Fillmore- If you are a dosa and all things south Indian lover like me, this is the place to go. This upscale eatery, dispensing namesake South-Indian crêpes & spice-infused cocktails in loftlike surroundings, is sure to please your foo-foo side!! Located at the swanky Fillmore Rd, San Francisco.

3. Rooh- Indian-inspired restaurant and cocktail bar. A communal space for relaxed social dining draws its inspiration from the vibrancy of the culture, art and music, as well as the innovative spirit of modern India.

4. Avatar’s - Indian-fusion eatery offering Punjabi burritos, enchiladas & another innovative flare in a basic space. I love when you mix Indian and Mexican together. Try their scrumptious Punjabi enchiladas and you won't look at Punjabi food the same way again. Located in beautiful Sausalito.

5. Curry Pizza house- Never thought I would ever say “one x-large butter chicken pizza please” but I did. Excellent choices. Definitely not for the faint of heart, the spices will open up your sinuses, but its so finger licking good! Come to the beautiful Dublin, CA for this amazing takeout desi pizza place.
